BLIND DOLPHIN
Introduction
·
Indus Blind Dolphin fresh water mammal and inhabitant of river
since centuries.
· Indus Dolphin Reserve created in 1974 by govt. of
Sindh in between Guddu and Sukkur Barrages (210 km's).
· Indus Blind Dolphin is only endemic to Pakistan.
· Second most threatened species of river Dolphins
in the world. It is also declared 'Endangered' species in
"Red Data Book" of IUCN.
· 1974 Survey - 150 Dolphin.
· Recent detailed survey of Indus Dolphin conducted
in March-April 2001 by Sindh Wildlife Department and WWF-Pakistan
shows 965 Dolphins from Jinnah Barrage (NWFP) to Kotri Barrage
(Sindh).
· Presently, Dolphin population is 602 from Guddu to
Sukkur and 18 from Sukkur to Kotri Barrages.

INDUS DOLPHIN RESCUE PROGRAMME
·
After America and Japan, Pakistan is third country, where
Dolphin rescues are being carried out locally.
· Sindh Wildlife Department rescuing dolphins since
last 5-6 years.
· 22 live Dolphins rescued, who got stranded into the
canals of Sukkur Barrage.
· A well-trained team of Wildlife officials and local
fishermen based at Sukkur, carry out these rescues operations
on regular basis.
· NGOs and locals to participate in the rescue operations.
